Postcard

Some Postcards

These are a few postcards I have done lately.

Lentil Soup

This is an 8x10 " piece I call Lentil Soup.
It was originally a piece that I had unsuccessfully painted. I overpainted it with black
transparent paint and sprinkled lentils over it and some salt and left it in the sun.
I then machine stitched, added a chain I found somewhere in my stash and some sequin hearts.
then attached it to a black painted stretched canvas

Comments

Needless to say I didnt get my May or June challenge done due to some health issues.
Afraid I might not get July done either. but will post a few small things I have done.

English Garden

I havent posted for a long time so thought I would put this one in.
It is monoprinted, stamped, machine stitched and hand embroidered

"Fabric Fool"

I think I am a "fabric fool" because I cant resist all the fabulous fabrics I see and if that isnt
enough I try to paint more.
Now all I have to do is try to depict what I mean.
Hang on , maybe I can by the end of May!!

"Changing Winds" April TIF challenge

This months challenge on how we feel about change was another thought provoker.
When I look back I realize that I was always excited about change, moving to different places,
learning new things, meeting new people. Watching our children growing and becoming wonderful men and women , though now I look back and remember their childhood and feel rather lonely. but thats life. I Loved it when we travelled in our little camper from
coast to coast in Canada and the US. Always hoping to see some fabric shops or quilt shows along
the way. I remember one time we went to Paducah during the big quilt week. I was amazed
and never thought that one of my quilts would be there in the future with "Canada Uncovered".
So now when change sometimes isnt so great due to ageing I can look back at all the great times
we had. So change is part of life. we might as well accept it.
This piece was monoprinted and then hand embroidered. I hadnt intended it for this challenge
but the more I worked the more it reminded me of a windy day and how the wind makes the
grasses blow one way and another, which I guess is how our lives are and one never knows
what is around the corner for us, which is probably just as well .

Blue Water

Another experiment using a stretched canvas.
shapes were joined together, stamped with lumiere paint and then machine stitched.
Back stitched around shapes , dollar store fish applied and then applied to the painted canvas.
same as the small green ones above. I do seem to have trouble getting them on straight.
I really like using the stretched canvas as they are easier to hang and look a little more
finished when hung. (that is if they are on straight!!) another thing I have to work on!!

Japan Memory

TIF March piece.
I did this by hand one afternoon using silk fabric scraps which I had received from friends when
I was in Japan in 1992.
I stretched it over an 8x10 stretched canvas piece.
The colors are fairly close to our March palette.
For some reason the off white part showed up as pink on
the scanner.

monoprinting experiment #2 &3

Background was monoprinted by putting paint on the surface, doing some swirls or whatever
on it and then laying the fabric on top and rolling it with a sponge roller.
After that I embroidered a bit and then put some beads on. I then attached it to a canvas
board.

monoprinting experiment #2

This one was done by spreading the paint on the surface and putting a piece of saran wrap
over it and then lifting the saran wrap and laying it over the fabric and patting it down.
After it dried I attached the fabric. the silver colored things were the pins from a Xmas present
my husband received.

monoprinting experiment #1

I have been trying to learn how to do monoprinting as shown in the last Quilting Arts.
It is really fun but messy. I thought I would do some 81/2x11" backgrounds. I really like
working with that size these days its easier on the back.
This has no name. I put a piece of onion bag net over the background and then added silk
flower leaves and some fabric circles with french knots in the middle. all hand done.
I fringed the edges. Hope to have more to show you later.

February TIF Challenge

Among my many memories of my childhood I thought of the Royal Visit of 1939.
King George V1` and Queen Elizabeth toured parts of Canada and Prince Edward Island was
one of their stops.
Things were quite different in those days. We lived in the western part of the Island, (actually
same village where we live now, after many years away) and Charlottetown, the capital was
about 75 miles away. As you can imagine we didnt get to vist there very often so when our parents
decided we were going to see the Queen (and the King of course but she seemed more interesting)
it was quite an adventure for us.
I cant remember very much about it but I know it was a red-letter day and the Queen was
beautiful. We only saw her drive past, not out of the car, but even that was important to us.
As usual my mental picture of what I was going to do was much more ambitious than what I
finally did. or was capable of doing I should say. Just thought I would make things a little more
colorful than they really were. It is postcard size (5x7) and mostly handwork while I was
watching the program about how the Royals work!!
Of course the swastika's represent what was to come. Probably that was the most carefree
day they had for four years.

Procrastination

I guess that's what I'm doing in regards to the Take It Further Challenge. I received the
newest Quilting Arts magazine and got caught up in experimenting with monoprinting,
flour paste resist and the painterly quilt collages. I'm really enjoying trying all these methods,
it is really fun so one of these days I'll stop playing and get serious. If I play long enough surely
my efforts will improve as far as the printing goes. Quilting Arts is such a great magazine and
gets the creative juices going.

"What Are You Old Enough To Remember"

February challenge looks very interesing.

Think there might be more than one piece if time and weak back permit.

Must get busy while the weather is still very cold and the ground is too icy to walk anywhere.

#1 Take-It-Further-Challenge

This is my first attempt for the January piece. I couldnt seem to come up with an idea for the
person I admired one. I knew the person but not how to do it, so I used your colour combinations instead.
Its not too exciting but hopefully I'll improve as the months go on.
The method is not very complicated. just the shapes sewn down, yarns couched over , a little
bit of gold shiva paint on the flowers. ribbon sewn around the petals and couched yarn for
the stem.
On to Feb. and hopefully more inspiration.
